If you don’t already know, I’m a beautician and I work for myself from home. I can’t lie, being a one woman business in the beauty industry is incredibly hard as there is so much competition to compete with.

There are a number of factors that led me to the decision to work for myself rather than being employed and working in a salon. Here are some of the main reasons that led me to the decision to work on a self-employed basis:

  1. I don’t have to worry about getting days off for hospital appointments – this is very important to me!
  2. I control how my day is run – I control the times clients come and allow extra time for treatments as I don’t want them to feel rushed
  3. I work the hours that suit me – with my illness, I can struggle in the mornings so I tend to start work around 11am. I also like to work more in the evenings once people have finished work
  4. I don’t particularly like the working salon atmosphere – being a very shy person, I find it hard to fit in when working in salons and I find that some salons (not all) can be very clicky.

Don’t get me wrong, when I did my training I loved working with the other girls that were in the same position as me but being shy, I’m so glad I started up on my own as I don’t think I would be the same beautician if I were to work for somebody else.
